I want to play the harp, but I have a commitment problem ...

Congratulations! You have decided to invest in yourself and learn to play the majestic harp. You get on Google, type in the question "how much do harps cost?", and you nearly have a heart attack. They are thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars. You begin to calculate how long it would take to either save up the money or pay off the installment plan, and you think you have hit the end of your harping career even before you have started.

Here's the good news: you can rent.

Once you have decided what type of harp you want, see my pedal vs. lever blog post, many manufacturers offer a rental program and some even offer a rent-to-own program. However, harp stores and private individuals also rent out their harps, and this can be a great way to go. One website used in the PNW to list harps for rent, sale, and more is reigningharps.com.

Renting provides you the opportunity to only commit short-term and keep your costs low. However, it is important to note that it is standard practice for you to put down a damage deposit and, in some cases, insure it. If you have questions about that, just talk about it with your harp teacher or the person/company you would like to rent from.

Hopefully this gives you a little insight into how to overcome a fear of commitment as you progress towards investing in yourself. Happy harping!
